What is RVSM?

Reduced Vertical Seperation Minimum (RVSM) airspace, implemented in North America in January 2005, saves fuel by increasing the number of flight levels between 29,000 and 41,000 feet. The FAA requires operators in this airspace to conduct height monitoring flights to verify altitude-keeping systems are within RVSM standards. Pilots must receive specialized training and an approved RVSM manual specific to the aircraft being operated in RVSM airspace must be kept on board.
